Overview
Measles is a mild respiratory viral disease. Symptom include a pathognomonic enanthema (Koplik or white spots), maculopapular rash precede a prodrome of fever (up to 105°F), malaise, cough, coryza, and conjunctivitis. In most cases, the rash develops 14 days after exposure. Blindness, severe respiratory infections like pneumonia, and ear infections are some of the measles side effects. Measles is very contagious and can spread to vulnerable individuals through even the slightest contact with an active case. It spreads through airdroplets in which the virus first attacks the respiratory tract and then spreads throughout the body. Thus, every precaution should be taken to prevent its spread, especially among people with reduced immune systems, such as newborns, children, pregnant women, or patients with immunodeficiency. The MMR vaccine provides protection against measles, mumps, and rubella. It should be administered time to time. The measles has no specific treatment. Although, symptomatic treatment such as healthy eating, drinking enough water, getting enough rest, and taking vitamin A supplements can help to reduce symptoms.
