Overview
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory disease caused by the influenza virus. It can cause mild to severe symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle and body aches, fatigue, and, in some cases, can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia. The flu is most common during the fall and winter months, but it can occur at any time of the year. The flu is typically spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, but it can also be spread by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes. The best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu shot each year, as the vaccine is updated to protect against the most common strains of the virus. Other preventive measures include washing hands frequently, avoiding close contact with people who are sick, and staying home if you are feeling sick.
